The story of Linnaea

The name Linnaea comes from the north. From Sweden, and from Linnaeus, the father of modern biological taxonomy. His life's work was to give proper names and proper places to the forms of life that had not yet been carefully seen. Any serious biology, in one way or another, stands somewhere in his lineage.

The name also carries Karolinska in it: the medical school, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, the Nordic tradition of medicine and natural history in which serious science was measured not by how loud it was, but by whether it lasted. It is a tradition we hold in high regard. It is also where the founder's own serious scientific training first began, and that thread still shapes how the company thinks about the work it chooses to do.

Linnaeus took one plant as his personal emblem: Linnaea borealis, the twinflower: a small, low subshrub of the northern forests, its stems creeping close to the ground, its roots reaching deep, its paired flowers blooming quietly, on schedule, through the boreal cold. Linnaeus described it as "lowly, insignificant, disregarded, flowering but for a brief space", and then made it his own. Because the plant that goes unnoticed is often the one with the deepest roots. It is unshowy, but it flowers. It endures. And in its own quiet way, it gives.

This is what we take from the name, and what we intend to become. Our purpose is a plain one: to find scientific work of the highest order that has quietly waited, unnoticed, in the world's most serious laboratories, and to carry it, with care, to the physicians and patients for whom it was always meant. Unhurried, rooted, patient with the timing; serious about the science, reverent toward the data.

Our focus today: urological diseases

We start in urology, where the distance between research and patient care is among the widest in medicine: large patient populations, decades of solid science, and few treatments that reach the clinic.

01 · The scale 01 · 规模

Chronic kidney disease alone affects an estimated 753 million people worldwide. Prostate cancer was diagnosed in over 1.5 million people in 2024, claiming nearly 420,000 lives. Benign prostatic hyperplasia affects an estimated 112.5 million men. Add bladder cancer, overactive bladder, kidney stones, and interstitial cystitis, and together these conditions affect more than a billion people.

02 · Not a research gap 02 ·

This is not a field starved of science. In the United States alone, the National Institutes of Health invest hundreds of millions of dollars each year in urological research. More than fifteen thousand clinical trials in urology are actively registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. Tens of thousands of peer-reviewed papers are published in the field every year. The research base is large and active.

03 · The translation gap 03 ·

In 2024, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved 50 new molecular entities across all fields of medicine. Only two of them were for urological disease. In 2023, out of 55 approvals, four were. Roughly one in twenty new medicines goes to urological patients, a population of more than a billion.

04 · Where we come in 04 · 我们的位置

The gap is not in the laboratory. It lies between what research has shown and what physicians can actually offer. In urology, a new therapy that changes first-line care appears only a handful of times a decade. Doing that translation work, carefully, is what Linnaea Bio is for.

05 · How we close it 05 · 我们的做法

We work on diagnostics and therapeutics together, and each drives the other. First, identify before treatment which patients a therapy will work for. Then bring those patients a treatment that does.

Diagnostics · Identify the patient

Tell, before treatment begins, who will respond to today's therapy and who will not.

Therapeutics · Follow with the right treatment

Bring effective treatment to the patients we identify: medicines already proven in the clinic whose full benefit has been diluted by treating every patient alike, and new combinations built on them.

Our conviction

We are selective about what we work on, and how. Three convictions guide those choices.

01 · The science we choose 01 ·

Rigor over novelty. Depth over breadth. We seek out scientific programs that have withstood years of independent verification rather than whatever is fashionable.

02 · The bridge we build 02 ·

Between a strong scientific finding and a clinical tool that actually helps a patient lies a long, unglamorous stretch of work. We do that work, and we do it properly.

03 · The standard we hold 03 ·

We hold ourselves to two things: whether the science stands up, and whether it eventually reaches the person it was meant for. The rest is secondary.

What we do 我们做
  • Work with programs that have earned real scientific standing
  • Stay accountable through the full path to the patient
  • Describe our progress only when it is worth describing
What we do not 我们不做
  • Chase what is currently popular
  • Substitute press releases for evidence
  • Promise timelines the science cannot support
06

How we work 我们如何工作

We find source science that has earned its standing, and take responsibility for its whole path from the laboratory to the patient. Every program we carry through sharpens the method for the next.

01
Source 寻源

We search the world's leading laboratories, and medicines with established clinical data, for science that has been validated and comes with clear intellectual property.

02
Validate 验证

We validate the science where it will be used: in the laboratory, in clinical studies and in everyday practice.

03
Translate 转化

We build the regulatory path and the manufacturing chain, and turn the science into a tool physicians can use.

04
Deliver 抵达

We deliver it to the physicians and patients it was meant for.

The disease 疾病

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the most common chronic conditions in aging men, affecting an estimated 112.5 million men worldwide and 23.1 million in China. For men with an enlarged prostate, clinical guidelines offer 5α-reductase inhibitors (5ARIs) as a standard treatment option. The drug class has been in use for more than thirty years.

The unmet need

Today the decision to prescribe rests on prostate size and PSA (AUA, EAU and CUA guidelines). These measures show whether a patient fits the drug, not whether the drug will work for him. In about one in three adult prostates, the drug's target is silenced by epigenetic methylation, and 25–30% of patients are reported not to respond. Response can be judged only from symptoms after months of treatment, while the patient carries the risk of sexual side effects. No test on the market predicts 5ARI response before treatment begins. 目前是否用药,主要依据前列腺体积和 PSA(AUA、EAU、CUA 指南)。

Our solution

A peripheral blood test, taken before treatment, that reads the epigenetic (methylation) state of the drug's target and predicts whether a 5ARI will work for this patient.

• Non-invasive: peripheral blood only, no biopsy
• Designed for real-time PCR, standard equipment in hospital molecular laboratories; no sequencing platform required
• Built on fifteen years of source science, supported by four NIH R01 grants totaling US$7.58 million

A new pathway for overactive bladder: moving beyond three decades of the same two drug classes.
The disease 疾病

Overactive bladder (OAB) is one of the most common chronic urinary conditions in adults. It affects roughly one in seven adults, with prevalence rising sharply with age. It is not life-threatening, but its symptoms (urinary urgency, frequency, nocturia and incontinence) are relentless, and over the years and decades they erode sleep, mobility, and independence.

The unmet need

Two drug classes dominate today's treatment, and both carry meaningful limitations. Most patients discontinue the first within a year, largely due to tolerability. The second carries cardiovascular safety considerations. When drugs fail, invasive options remain, each with its own burdens. For a condition this common, the field has been waiting for a genuinely new pharmacological mechanism for over two decades.

Our solution

We are developing a first-in-class oral small molecule that engages a novel receptor pathway to relax bladder smooth muscle. In preclinical models, our lead candidate has demonstrated nanomolar target potency, high oral bioavailability, and clear in vivo efficacy, while operating outside the two mechanisms that limit current therapies.
